A Song for England ……and for Liverpool, Tottenham, Arsenal, Manchester United, Everton, Chelsea, West Ham, Aston Villa, Bolton Wanderers, Blackburn Rovers, Newcastle United, Fulham, and even Stuart Pearce

by Sack the Juggler on October 5th, 2006

Whenever I think of sports songs, for some reason Chas and Dave banging out “Snooker Loopy” springs to mind, if not that then Tottenham’s “Ossie’s going to Wembley, his knees have gone all trembley”, or even worse, John Barnes’s cultured tones trying to sound “street” in the Anfield Rap.  I can even sing every embarassing song my own team has ever issued in the name of a successful FA cup run.

Yet some songs seem to make that step up from embarassing terrace chant to respectable terrace chant and even to transcend the sport itself and be a great song in their own right.

I was recently sent an England tribute song entitled “Thug Lovin” which is dedicated to the 1966 world cup players.  Its not due for release for a couple of months, but I thought you might want a sneak preview.

Its a beautiful song by the Sunchasers featuring Victoria Pope.  As you can see from the photo, she’s no Chas and Dave, but she’ll do…

and here’s the song - let me have your thoughts on it.

Nice effort, a very good piece of music, but how did you hear that transfer to the terraces exactly?

FingFangFoom, its a dance track rather than a terrace chant, and I really like it

Nothing beats the toe curling embarrassment of ” good old arsenal, we’re proud to say that name..” and wait for it, heres the KILLER line… ” while we sing this song we’ll win the game”

When this was announced as the official team anthem last year, I was sick as a parrot, John.

Could any other song make us sound, simultaneously, BOTH like a load of 50’s era, rattle waving Alf Garnetts, and a bunch of wussy 7 year olds? The fact that it was written by Jimmy Hill, who used to run the lines at Highbury occassionally ( and white them with his chin at the same time? ) just makes this 100 times worse. God damn it.
