All Hail King Figo
When Inter Milan signed Luis Figo, I think it looked to a lot of people like a semi-desperate move. Figo, after all, is a creaky old man with a strangely mercurial temperament (witness his stalking off for Portugal against England, then returning to play like a man possessed again Holland less than a week later) whose presence mostly likely would turn into a sad publicity ploy. And for the first few weeks, the suspicious among us were right: Figo wasn’t match fit, didn’t play much, and seemed totally irrelevant to his new team’s future.
But over the last month? Oh have things have changed. Figo is now the king of the pitch, running the Inter team with so much confidence that it’s almost embarrassing for their opponents. No matter where he plays - in the middle behind the strikers, or out on either wing - when his team is flowing, everything goes through the old Portuguese warhorse. He’s as fit and as skilled as ever, not to mention apparently faster than he’s been in years. What are they feeding him at Inter, anyway?
As unlikely as it is for anyone to get even within shouting distance of Juve, if Figo keeps playing like this he may single-handedly drag Inter back into the running. It’s such a pleasure to just watch the guy play; here’s hoping he can keep it up for another five years.
