Arsene Wenger - habitual hypocrite…
Looks like Arsene has gone off on another one of his rants, trying to take the splinter out of someone else’s eye before taking the tree trunk out of his own (or whatever it was the Bible said).
To be fair, as usual, he has a point, and he’s directed his attack on deliberate foul play and blames referees for allowing players to escape punishment despite verbally and physically abuse other players.
“We have a young team and they are kicked and punched. And in the end, you are still supposed to say ’sorry, I am not strong enough?’ That is difficult to take, frankly.
“I don’t feel it is right to punch people in the stomach and afterwards to say ‘ok, they are just babies crying’. It is not the way I see the game.”
“I don’t blame the other managers, or the players — if they are asked to give 100 per cent, then of course, they do — but it is the referees who have to decide how far they can go,” said Wenger quickly backtracking (so its the referees fault not your fellow professionals?).
Wenger also said he had video evidence of well-known players and managers swearing freely at referees and not being punished, despite foul and abusive language being a dismissible offence. Again he is right, and the only player I can ever remember being sent off for foul and abusive language was Everton’s McFadden, but that was only because he directed his abuse at the great man himself, Graham Poll….
Prompted to confirm that Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney was one of the swearing players, Wenger said: “He is not the only one.”
Wenger also said he did not swear at referees and believed players and managers should not do so at all.
As I’ve said, to be fair to Wenger he is right, it should not be acceptable, but the comments above, especially those in bold towards the end, come not long after he was charged by the FA for physically and verbally attacking a fellow manager… not acceptable indeed!

i believe Arsene is one of the most respected managers of all the clubs in the english game aswell as international. As an avid watcher of the Arsenal games and the other games i never saw him ( lip reading a bit ) swear at the ref or linesmen. If he got up i, it was to contest bad play or the ref making an error of judgement to his view.
Anybody not agreeing with him ,like players Wayne Rooney , Gary Neville ( not picking on one team ) and a lot of others are not watching the same game.
Senior players must show what the beatiful game is all about and they will learn not only from their own club but from their rival counter parts.
Viva Arsene , Viva Arsenal

Rather than Wenger being a hypocrite, it’s you who’s depicting a great degree of lack of basic understanding.
Wenger did not say that rule breaches (such as violent conduct) don’t occur at all. He’s not that naive. All he’s saying is that it’s up to the referee to apply the laws of the game. In fact, he said he does not blame opposition managers for asking their players for 100% commitment - his problem is the referees not applying the laws of the game.
When Wenger committed the transgression you keenly refer to as an indication of hypocrisy, he was called to book, and he duly put his hand up and pleaded guilty. That’s a far cry from a team that punch opposition players off the ball and promptly proceed to call them ‘cry babies’.
So, who’s the hypocrite? As usual your rabid hatred of Wenger blinds you to the very clear and intelligent points he’s making!

While swearing is verbal abuse, it is not the only manner by which one can be verbally abusive. Thus, Wenger can be charged with verbal abuse without swearing at all.

James and Grimaldi - great work lads - you’ve proved Arsene’s point - verbal abuse is never acceptable - even from a pair wankers like you two….

Ashley - well said beautifully put, but my point was that its all very well for Wenger to complain about verbal and physical abuse, but if he then goes and verbally and physically abuses Pardew he is doing exactly the things he is complaining about.
I do agree he’s well respected within the game, and a very intelligent bloke, but he just seems to think there is one rule for him and one for everyone else

Freddie - you are right in so far as he complained about a lack of action by the referees (except in his case) but he did also say that verbal and physical abuse is not acceptable, regaless of being charged with it himself

Jim - another very good point, people can be abusive without swearing, either by their body language (attitude) or their tone - does it matter what words they use while they do it?

Sack the Juggler - But one can surely say, “What I did was totally unacceptable, and I deserve to be punished for it”. That means they accept they did something wrong, they put their hand up and deserve to be punished - Wenger didn’t contest the charge or the penalty, remember. I don’t detect any hypocrisy in that at all.
And I don’t see how Wenger wants one rule for himself and another one for others, given he freely accepted calpability and took his punishment, like a brave soul. Witness the Sheffield United team, who punch the lights out of otherwise superior opponents and then proceed to label them ‘cry babies’! Where is the bravery in that? As kids, we were always told that bullies are cowards, and it’s never been truer!

Wenger being charged - and I remind you he’s denying and contesting the charge - doesn’t tantamount to being guilty of the offence…innocent until proven guilty and all that…
His comments about violent conduct and ‘doing’ people have come after Morgan was proved guilty and banned by the FA. The two situations are miles apart, wouldn’t you agree?

its a shame that you dislike wenger and or arsenal so much that you have to be hyper-critical of everything they do,however small it is,regardless of the provocation involved,i.e pardew screaming in his face, and saying negatives things about arsenal reaching the champions league final, concerning the use of foreign players, generaly being xenophobic, and all this after the help and advice wenger gave pardew when he first went into management, but wenger unlike you isnt a saint,he is just a frog

Freddie another good post, and I guess if he’d said it your way then I’d feel more ambivalent towards him, but he doesn’t say it that way, and I know he’s an intelligent and educated man, whom, I’m assured is very charming in person. That’s why his ocassional outbursts seem to wrong.

Rich, generally I admire the man for his achievements and his definitely admire his team and his football.
Its his pronouncements that I find distasteful. He’s not the only manager who does this, and I know that his words can be taken out of context, but he seems to deliberately choose to focus on a certain aspect that will ignore the wider subject to avoid bringing his own perceived failings to to the forefront.
If I didn’t know he was french I would swear he was Swiss or Austrian, both nations seem to enjoy the minutie rather than the big picture.
