Bad Luck Jose, Bad Luck
As predicted on TheFootie.com a couple of days ago, everyone’s favourite Portugeezer had a ready made excuse for Barcelona dumping his expensive charges out of the Champion’s League but I have to admit I was a bit disappointed in it’s originality.
Bad luck. With a fortnight between the defeat in the first leg and the second last night, the very best Moaninho could come up with as “bad luck”. I have to fear for the Special One if his overactive imagination has become so frazzled that bad luck is the best excuse he could manage so I’m starting a competition to find a new set of quality excuses for Jose and the boys. Best ones will get special mentions on The Footie and go into my personal Hall of Fame. Mr. J. Mourinho need not apply.
The game itself never really ignited quite as much as the neutrals had wanted but watching the skills and trickery of Ronaldinho, Deco etc. made for great viewing (and the aggregate result didn’t hurt too much either). Ronaldinho is my polar opposite to Mourinho, he plays the whole game with a smile whether he is flicking the ball behind his head, beating three men and banging in a great goal or getting kicked from pillar to post by defenders with only a modicum of his talent and he’s rightly seen as the best player in the world today.
I never get bored watching him and with Frank Rijkaard making it clear to Roman Abramovich that even all of his money wouldn’t persuade Ronnie to leave the Nou Camp for Stamford Bridge all real football fans can sit back happy in the knowledge that there are still world class players who value tradition and playing on the real big stages over money.
For those of us getting cynical about the big business aspect of modern football, we’ve always got Ronaldinho.
