Bad News For Brazil…Ronaldo Back In Training

by Alan on June 15th, 2006

I know I’ve been pretty down on Ronaldo recently and I will be again today but it’s only because I know how great a player he can be and it pains me to watch him masquerading as a Brazilian international these days.

News-wise, he’s back in training today after being taken to hospital suffering from headaches and dizziness late last night which brings back memories (painful ones for him and Brazil) of his problems before the 1998 World Cup Final.

After being passed fit to return to training by the medical staff at a clinic in Frankfurt, Ronaldo will link back up with his teammates today and prepare for the tough game against Australia on the 18th June. Having already been told by his coach Carlos Alberto Parreira that he will start, Ronaldo may well be feeling the pressure from the watching press and media as well as the expectant Brazilian fans as the signs of him turning in a World Cup winning performance are ominous to say the least.

Parreira has played down the obvious problems his star striker amongst a star-studded squad has by saying he just needs to play to regain a little pace but looking at Ronaldo against Croatia I’d have to say he’d need to lose about a stone and a half to help regain some pace and that’s obviously not the cards either physically or medically in three days.

Gambling on strikers seems to be the order of the day for this World Cup and not just with Brazil but if Ronaldo’s form doesn’t improve soon, I can’t see Parreira sticking with him to the detriment of their whole World Cup campaign. It’s not like Brazil are short of able replacements like England for one thing.
