Capello to Real?

by footie on November 22nd, 2005

CapelloAccording to a sudden frenzy of reports in the Spanish and Italian media, Juventus boss Fabio Capello has already signed a deal that will take him to Real Madrid next season. The rumored deal supposedly includes “a special clause imposing a penalty on the parties if either should back out,” which suggests that it’s essentially done and dusted. Capello already served a spell at Real in the mid-90s, taking the club to the La Liga title. Since then, he’s found success all over Italy but has still had his name whispered every time Real struggles (which, lately, has been quite frequently).

Though nothing is yet official, Capello’s cryptic remarks earlier today about his good relationship with the current Juve ownership (whose apparently imminent departure would likely see Capello also leaving the club), and his desire for the “new stimulus” provided by “an experience abroad” have certainly done nothing to quiet the rumors. And I guess this also means Totti won’t be moving to Real, huh?

[...] To the surprise of exactly no one, Real Madrid have fired coach Wanderley Luxemburgo. Since it’s happening in the middle of the year, it’s unlikely that the Capello rumors will really catch fire again, since he’s not going to leave Juve just as they’re running away with Serie A. While reserve coach Juan Ramon Lopez Caro has temporarily taken charge of the team, absurdly big names are being bandied about, among the those of Jose Mourinho and Arsene Wenger. I may be completely out of my mind, but the chances of Mourinho leaving a dominating team midseason seem like they’re pretty much nil, and Wenger also seems unlikely to make a change right now. I do believe, though, that Mourinho’s ego is big enough that he could be persuaded to take over at Real over the summer - it’ll be interesting to watch all that shake out. [...]
