Congratulations To Gerrard and Rooney

by Alan on April 24th, 2006

Steven Gerrard Player of the YearBig well done to Steven Gerrard and Wayne Rooney as they have picked up the PFA Player of the Year and PFA Young Player of the year awards respectively for season 2005/2006.

Rooney holds onto his title as Young Player of the Year after winning it last season and while it’s a bit strange writing about a player who has been setting the football world alight for so long as still being eligible for the Young Player award, I think it’s a testament to Wayne Rooney, Everton and Manchester United that he has been handled in the right way as a young lad and not allowed to burn out and lose the potential he shown as a teenage prodigy at Goodision Park.

Steven Gerrard adds to his own Young Player of the Year award five years ago by taking home the Player of the Year gong and after a superb season helping Liverpool to third in the Premiership and into the FA Cup Final last weekend, it’s a fitting personal reward for one of the English game’s most consistent high performers.

For the good of the English domestic game it’s good to see two young Englishmen winning the two awards and showing proof that despite a slew of low cost immigrants flooding British football over the past decade, if the British players are good enough then the cream eventually rises to the top.

Congrats to both… even if Rooney plays for Man U.

BTW, has his birth certificate been verified? He’s an absolute beast! He can’t possibly be as young as they say.

I wouldn’t fancy standing in front of Rooney and asking for verification in person. Maybe leave that one to you Bald Man ;-)

A bit of an issue with anger management that one, eh?
