David Beckham Wants To Play Major League Soccer
With echoes of Pele, George Best and Franz Beckenbauer in the 1970s, David Beckham has said he would love to finish his career in the USA playing Major League Soccer. While he’s not planning on leaving Real Madrid for another three years, it would seem like a natural progression for a player with such a worldwide reputation to ease himself into retirement in a country which needs some star names in it’s leagues to help raise the profile of their game in the way the legends I mentioned above did in the 70s.
Obviously the participation of retiring star names in the NASL didn’t help give it any kind of longevity in a country where sport is more usually played by big fat men in enough padding to withstand a car crash or 7 foot tall freaks of nature but the fact that a modern day marketing man’s dream such as Beckham has admitted that the current MLS setup would be a viable option for him should be a promising sign.
I won’t get cynical and say that the fact Beckham recently opened a David Beckham Football Academy in Los Angeles would have anything to do with his new found regard for the MLS. That would be just plain wrong. And possibly cynical. And also possibly correct if we’re all honest about it.

MLS needs all the publicity it can get. I follow the league - hell, I’ve had season tickets in the past! - and even I missed the start of the season.
If he actually comes, I hope he studies a few Lothar Mathias tapes for what NOT to do.

He’s saying it’ll be three years before he’d consider it so once his legs have finally gone altogether and no big enough European club will take a punt on him then he’ll come over, take the $$$ and patronise your club and fans.
What a gentleman.

I think the guaranteed value is today - immediate publicity for a leage many don’t know or remember exists - with further POSSIBLE value down the road. For example, Valderamma was old, but he still played with lot of heart. Now who knows what sort of attitude Becks (and Posh) will bring with him.

I can’t help but be concerned what kind of damage will that do to Beckham if he does go through with this? Playing soccer instead of football? He’s considered one of the best ballers in history.
A gentleman and a philanthropist. ;)

Hallelujah! Saint David’s goin to America. Beckham + American capitalism = marriage made in heaven.
Right now I feel a bit low. Charlton lost again. They’ll win and qualify for nothing. As usual they’ll self destruct towards the end of the season and finish in the bottom half. Oh well! There’s always winning the intertoto cup to qualify for Europe.

Sasha,
once he gets past the language barrier, I think he’ll settle in nicely. :)
jonathan,
don’t panic! Madrid still have three years to run the life out of him… or let him rust on the bench. Their choice.
Now I’ll be off. I’ve only got 36 months to get Victoria to fall in love with Ohio.

If he so wanna retire here in the US, playing in the MLS, he can retire right now. His arrival in Madrid has been the reason why we’ve sucked for 3 long years! The sad part is he’s going to stay even with the new management. MLS can sure use him right now.

i think if beckham wants to come over here let him…lots of people in america enjoy watchin him play…and then that will drawl a couple more fans to the games…which will help the leauge a little bit…i think that he should come over here, but it is a win lose situation just cuz he is so good that there might not be much of a challenge for him over here, or maybe thats what he wants?…..
