Dean Shiels Almost Ready For Comeback
In true Northern Irish hero fashion, Hibernian’s Dean Shiels looks likely to be able to kickstart his comeback soon following an operation to remove his eye only six weeks ago.
The 21 year old midfielder cum striker made his international debut in our 1-1 draw with Portugal at Windsor Park late last year and has made great strides up in Scotland since moving there from Arsenal.
Dean’s eye problems only came to light in January of this year when he broke the news to Hibs website that he had actually lost the sight in his right eye when he was only eight years old, an unfortunate accident with a wallpaper scraper being the cause. Having hidden his problem from most people throughout his rise through the footballing ranks, he had been having severe headaches and discomfort recently and was advised by medical staff to have the eye removed.
Having progressed so far in his career already with only the sight in one eye and then aiming for such a swift comeback after the operation, Dean Shiels has shown a level of courage notably absent in so many of his contemporaries. For a young lad of 21 to go through such a strenuous operation and the only thought on his mind being to get back onto the training pitch and regain his place in the Hibernian team speaks volumes of the guy’s attitude and personality and I’m hoping we get to see plenty more of Dean in the green and white of Northern Ireland in the coming years.
