Did Juve Just Win the Scudetto?
It kills me to admit it, but I think they did. After Milan and Fiorentina losses this weekend, Juve now stand a full eight points clear of Milan and are 10 up on both the Viola and Inter. While it’s obviously still (relatively) early, barring a catastrophic drop in form, it’s almost impossible to imagine anyone catching them - and nothing so far has indicated that such a drop is coming. God dammit.
Today’s match at Fiorentina was certainly not a foregone conclusion - the Viola hit the bar twice and the post once and, without a late goal by the sickeningly talented Camoranesi, the game would have ended in a draw. But it didn’t. At that’s the thing about Juve: more often than not, they do a lot of standing around and holding on until the ball bounces off Trezeguet into the goal enough times to put them ahead. Admittedly, that didn’t happen today - but in the eyes of a bitter Milan fan, it’s an infuriating pattern. It seems like nothing but luck, but it happens every week. At some point, the rest of us have to admit that the team just gets it done - somehow, no matter how poorly they might be playing, they find a way to win. Which pretty much sucks for everyone else, because it’s not going to stop.
