Glazer in United “Franchise” Gaffe
In a world where every word is investigated and every public utterance dissected by the press, surely Malcolm Glazer could have used a better phrase than one containing the word “franchise” when telling reporters how great things are going for Manchester United.
British fans do not want to think of their clubs as “franchises”, capable of being moved from city to city if attendences drop or shirt sales decline a little, this isn’t American Football and we will not stand for any business decision which would see our clubs moved hundreds of miles just to appeal to a new demographic. Ask Wimbledon fans how they took the move to bcome Milton Keynes Dons and you’ll find out. You won’t find them watching the MK Dons in the most place though, you’d be safer going along to AFC Wimbledon where the original spirit of their club was transferred too, non league or not, and the real Crazy Gang still pay homage.
If the riots outside Old Trafford when his sons visited for the first time have taught Malcolm Glazer nothing, and it appears they haven’t, then let me dish out some words of wisdom for him. When in Rome, do as the Romans do and when speaking about your English football club, call it a club. Tampa Bay Buccaneers may be a franchise, Manchester United is not. If you want more proof come over to England and walk around outside Old Trafford telling people what a great franchise it is. You may be a little shocked at the reaction.

I would like to see Glazer saying ‘franchise’ in front of the MUFC fans too :-)
The timing was bad too since it came days before United FC (the club founded by former MUFC fans) won the North West Counties Second Division.
It is not a good start for Glazer and I wonder if his intention to give a big budget to Ferguson will silence the critics among the MUFC supporters.
