Group Of Death? What Muppet Called It That?
That would be me (amongst others obviously). So the unbelievable has happened and both Argentina and Holland have strutted their way out of “group of death” Group C already and can afford to go a little easier on each other in the last game on the 21st June in Frankfurt.
Argentina have looked immense, especially against a poor Serbia and Montenegro side supposedly at war internally, and Holland have, as usual, done enough to warrant a second round spot without really breaking into a sweat.
Such a change from Japan/Korea for the Argies though were they went out in the group stages after a disastrous showing whereas now, with the legend to end all legends Diego Maradona nearly having a heart attack cheering them on in every game (is there any other former player who gets quite so excited watching his country play as Maradona?), they look to have all of the boxes ticked when it comes to key areas to drive them on to another possible World Cup win.
I’ve never made any secret of my interest in the Argentina team at World Cups, I think it stems from my young days watching Mexico ‘86 where the aforementioned genius Maradona put on the greatest show of footballing brilliance I’ve seen and the Spurs history of signing Ossie Ardiles and Ricky Villa after they’d helped their country to World Cup glory in 1978.
The knockout stages will really separate the men from the boys though and it’s a pity in a way that both Argentina and Holland have already qualified for the next round, if they both needed the three points to get through then this match between them could have been one of the game sof the tournament rather than the practice match I now expect it to become.
