Hero To Zero
Werder Bremen goalkeeper Tim Wiese had the game of his life and then made a mistake that will haunt him for the rest of his career as he spilled a cross to allow Emerson to tap home and take Juventus into the quarter finals of the Champion’s League.
Bremen had looked in total control as Johan Micoud fired them into a 4-2 aggregate lead but Juve’s French hotshot David Trezeguet pulled one back for the home side and after much heroics by Wiese and his defence in keeping the Italians at bay, he caught a Nedved cross, dropped, rolled, dropped the ball and Emerson tucked away the easiest goal of his career and a very welcome one for his employers.
You couldn’t help but feel sorry for Wiese after he had pulled off some great saves but football’s a 90 minutes sport and if you let your concentration waver then mistakes will come and what a mistake it was. Hopefully he’ll bounce back ok from it but it’s got to be a confidence destroyer especially in such a big game and with such a catastrophic result.
Juve, on the other hand, live to fight another day although they’ll have to pick their game up if they fancy adding another European Cup to the two they’ve had in their Turin trophy cabinet before and Fabio Capello knows that there won’t always be an unfortunate goalkeeper on hand to bail them out.
