It’s Not Envy Frank

by Alan on March 14th, 2006

Chelsea's Frank Lampard‘Critics Envy Us’ is the headline news from Chelski’s “Fat” Frank Lampard today as he rounds on all of the backbiters against the Russian Dream Team. I didn’t see Alan Hylands or The Footie mentioned by name but I’m pretty sure I’ve got a sneaking feeling that it was in this direction he was looking.

Lampard, understandably, comes out in solid defence of “the most reviled man in European football” Jose Mourinho and says that his petulance and arrogance in defeat and victory are only a by-product of his overwhelming desire to win at all costs. He goes on to say that there is now an envy of a team (Chelsea) that has dominated on the domestic front.

Broken record time: there is a time and a place for enforcing your overbearing personality on people but to do it constantly gets irritating and childish and it’s for this reason people have turned against Mourinho and his now boring rhetoric.

To say that other clubs and fans “envy” Chelsea because they dominate is to ignore the main reason why they now dominate, namely the pilfered roubles of Roman Abramovich. If I had spent £300m+ on a squad and coaching staff I’d expect to dominate on a domestic level and also on the European front for that matter but Chelsea have continuously fallen early at the true test of a top club: the Champion’s League.

If Lampard and his boss really want to earn the envy of European football fans then they’ll need to translate their media showboating into the kind of performances on the pitch that took Manchester United to so many titles during the 1990s and most of all, the European Cup that won Alex Ferguson the “Sir” prefix to his name.
