Jean-Pierre Papin - Marseille’s Curly Haired Prince

by Alan on April 1st, 2006

Jean-Pierre PapinCrowned European Footballer of the Year in 1991, the Art Garfunkel look-a-like was easily the deadliest striker in Europe after Marco Van Basten started picking up regular injuries. Coincedentally, it was AC Milan who stumped up the large transfer fee to prise him away from Marseille after his goals (and Bernard Tapie’s fiddling) had fired them to the 1992 European Cup.

Papin was never quite the same prolific scorer in Italy or in Germany with Bayern Munich after he left Milan but his strike rate of 30 goals in only 54 appearances for the French national team at a time when they were struggling with one of the poorest French sides in memory tells more of a tale of a small man with an extraordinary knack for finding the back of the net.

This collection shows some of the goals he scored while in his prime in the white of Marseille before the lure of Berlusconi and Milan stole his spark.
