Jurgen Klinsmann v Iran - 1998 World Cup
Certianly not one of Klinsmann’s greatest ever goals but a great reminder of the rampant appetite to hit the back of the net of the great man, even in the very twilight of his career.
Jurgen Klinsmann was always a spectacular striker but his reputation was sadly besmirched in the early 1990s by his habit of hitting the ground like he’d been taken out by a sniper on the roof of the stadium whenever a defender got near him.
So much was he associated with this practice that when he scored his first goal on his debut for Tottenham Hotspur against Sheffield Wednesday in 1994, he and the whole Spurs team took a running dive towards the sideline in celebration. Thankfully, Klinsmann’s time at Spurs was marked by his goalscoring exploits and genuine enthusiasm for the game as opposed to negative aspects of his play which seemed to disappear overnight as soon as he hit English soil. A Player of the Year award for that 1994/1995 season only told half of the tale of his success at Spurs.
Certainly one of the most complete strikers of my lifetime, Klinsmann was equally assured on both feet and in the air and his slight frame belied a strength and determination that brought him many goals wherever he went, be it Inter Milan, Monaco, Spurs, Bayern Munich or beyond.
One of my all-time favourite players, I give you Jurgen Klinsmann.
