Last Gazza Post. Seriously.

by footie on December 7th, 2005

Gazza againI really was going to let the whole Gazza thing go, but there’s a great article in the Times today that broke my resolve. What sets this piece apart from the flood of media surrounding the firing at Kettering and associated meltdown is that this writer’s actually managed to track down a couple of players who are willing to talk about him - and what they’ve got to say, perhaps not surprisingly, isn’t pretty.

One of the players, former captain Jamie Paterson, said he was relieved by the departure because the team “were at sixes and sevens, we weren’t sure about our positions.” On a personal level, he felt let down by Gazza, who he “used to idolize.” When asked about the time under Gascoigne, Paterson’s fellow senior player Christian Moore described it this way:

It was a very funny six weeks. I didn’t enjoy it one bit. I don’t think Paul was in a fit state to run the club. He’s a lovely bloke, he’d give you his last penny. What happened is so sad.

So, yeah. He was a mess. A drunken, inept mess - I think we can stop saying “allegedly” at this point. It’s just so, so sad. And, particularly coming so quickly on the heel of the death of George Best from a lifetime of overindulgence, it’s hard to deny that Gazza is gleefully heading down the same, tragic path.
