Manchester United’s Scholes is a ginger
Scholes has kicked it all off by calling the ref “a f*****g gay boy”! This apparently homophobic remark has upset many people, and there have been calls for him to apologise to the ref involved, because apparently, “No player, ref or fan should have to endure abuse about their race or sexuality.”
But is calling a gay referee “gay”, really abusing him? If he’s gay then surely its just an apt description of him, so he can’t be offended. If the ref is NOT gay, but he takes offence at being called gay, then surely it is the ref who is being homophobic? Why take offence if someone gets your sexuality wrong, if not because you take offence at that type of sexuality?
And anyway, why should only abuse relating to sexuality and colour be barred, what about abuse relating to height, hair colour or even the team you play for?
Peter Tatchell, spokesman for gay human rights group OutRage!, said: “We urge Paul to apologise and express his opposition to homophobia, the short-arsed, ginger manc tw*t!”

I agree that if there is to be calls for someone to apologise for what some feel is a predjudiced comment, then other “characteristics” slurs should be protected and fought against.
Unfortunately we live in Politically Correct times, where offending someone is the equivalent of punching them in the face and no one seems to have a sense of humour.
On the way into work this morning I was listening to a discussion on the Radio about the new Age-ism laws relating to employment. It will be an offence to discriminate on the basis of age. While in essence this should protect our ageing workforce, this will also protect the humourless grumpy old men that take offence to age comments on birthday cards from their colleagues. As there is no financial limit for compensation, you may find yourself slapped with a claim for a six figure sum as a result of writing an innocent comment on a birthday card for a humourless arseholes that just happens to be approaching retirement.
Will we soon have to be wary of speaking feely as we will be hit with a massive claim for damaging someone’s feelings about their dietary preferences??? Or the type of music they listen to????

Must admit I’m in two minds about this one.
Firstly, i don’t want to see anyone getting insulted (unless its that miserable f*cker Wenger), but then on the other hand it really winds me up if someone only complains about a particular aspect of an insult (such as colour or sexuality) as if the other types of insult don’t really matter. An insult is an insult regardless of its subject matter!
Then as you point out, we’ve got the question over when is a joke, or a wind up and insult? I guess its when some humourless old git takes offence (bugger just stereotyped the aged - luckily I don’t live in the UK or I’d be done under the anti-agism laws!)

There is too much of this politically correct bollox nowadays and it’s just getting out of hand now.I understand your point but it’s obvious to any idiot that if you start making racist comments you’re going to get in bother. As for anything else, people shouldn’t stick their noses in if they’re not wanted. If the ref took offence, he should have sorted it out with scholes man-to-man after the game. Anyone outside the situation should get a fucking life. It’s one harmless comment said in the heat of the moment and the boy’s only human so get over it.

I know he’s only an Aussie, but Mark Latham, the former Labour leader out there has hit the nail on the head about political correctness.
He says, “Australian mates and good blokes have been replaced by nervous wrecks, metrosexual knobs and tossbags.
Instead of calling a spade a spade, our national conversation is now dominated by weasel words and the pretence of politeness”.
