No English Interest So Far In Torres
Since we all know that a football agent’s word is as good as gospel, we can sleep safe in the knowledge that there hasn’t been any transfer interest in Atletico Madrid’s star striker Fernando Torres this summer because his agent has told us so.
If there has been no interest and his client has no intention of leaving his boyhood heroes until the end of his contract in a further two years time, I’m stumped as to why Senor Antonio Sanz has had to come out and tell the football press about what amounts to one of the summer’s biggest non-stories, transfer wise.
I know that Manchester United have been heavily linked with Torres this week as the newspaper editors throw all strikers names into a hat and then draw out one a day to fill their back pages as a replacement for Ruud Van Nistlerooy but I can’t think that Sanz’s denial of any interest or move is in fact a hint to any circling vultures that his player hasn’t got any other deals on the table and may be susceptible to a journey abroad.
Some good displays in Spain’s disappointing World Cup adventure have added to Torres reputation as a potential big star and at 22 he certainly has time on his side. Maybe his style is a little too close to that of Wayne Rooney (minus Rooney’s brick wall shattering strength) to really find a place for him at Old Trafford and if the transfer budget is as limited as some rumours are saying, he might just be a little too expensive for Sir Alex Ferguson’s tastes.
With English clubs a little light in the wallet department and the Italian football meltdown, maybe I’m wrong and Torres is ready to sit it out at Atletico for another year or two. Better that than make the wrong move now in the long term. How long until Newcastle make a ridiculous bid for him though?
