Quick Updates: Keane, McLeish

by footie on November 29th, 2005

McLeish againAccording to this morning’s news, Pompey hope to offer Alex McLeish their vacant management position within the next few days. After failing in his attempts to woo George Burley and and Neil Warnock to the club, chairman Milan Mandaric told papers that he will officially approach Rangers today for permission to speak to the all-but-fired Scot. In Mandaric’s ideal world, McLeish will be in place for Saturday’s game at Man U.

Update: Rangers said no. Um, why? Do they want the satisfaction of a firing, or something? I can’t imagine they’ll let McLeish stay around for more than another week or so - why deny him the chance at another job?

Also, reports keep coming about the Roy Keane-Fiorentina thing. My own misgivings aside, this increasingly sounds like a real news story. The latest is that, in addition to paying him £50,000/week, the Viola would allow Keane to commute from Ireland for the first six months of a possible contract with them - on the club’s dime. Damn. I wonder if they’ll roll out an actual red carpet when he visits later this week.
