Same Old Weekend Premiership

by Alan on March 6th, 2006

Was it really a coincedence that after I had a go at Arsenal on this very blog a couple of days ago that they went and turned in one of their most emphatic performances of the season with a 4-0 stroll against London neighbours Fulham? I doubt it but Thierry Henry and co. did look in top form and with Spurs not playing until Sunday against close league rivals Blackburn, it was making for nervous viewing for those of us of a Lilywhite persuasion.

The Robbie Keane show (despite throwing away a two goal lead at home) took the three points and has given us a nice five point cushion in fourth place with ten games to go and a little confidence back into the players after a rocky patch of late. Special mention has to go to Keano’s opener, easily the best piece of skill and finish you’ll see all season although it won’t get the proper attention because of who scored it and for whom. If it had been Joe Cole the English media would have piddling their drawers with excitement but that’s the media world we live in.

Birmingham, Portsmouth, Sunderland and West Brom had an all too familiar day at the offices coming away with no points and, as is usually the case with most Premiership seasons, the biggest end of year excitement is looking to be at the bottom of tha table rather than watching another Chelsea romp to the title (isn’t it getting boring for them yet? God knows it is for all of the rest of us.)

Does it say it all for England’s “greatest league in the world” that the battle for 4th and 17th places are more keenly contested than that for numero uno? Sadly in the days of Champion’s League money and the “in crowd” big clubs I think it does.
