Seeds Announced for WC Draw; Holland, US Cry
The eight seeded nations for Friday’s World Cup draw have been announced: Germany, England, Italy, Brazil, Argentina, Spain, France and Mexico are the official top eight, and will therefore avoid having to play one another in the group stages. When we remember that England had to play France in the first game of Euro2004, the fact that they finished second to Brazil in Fifa’s points-based seeding system is a very real sign of the team’s rising prominence (AKA the Power of Roon).
Meanwhile, the unseeded Dutch and America teams will surely feel hard done by, particularly given that the US not only despises but also frequently beats Mexico. To add insult to injury, it turns out that the US actually missed out on being seeded by just a single point, finishing with 43 points to the 44 earned by both Italy and Argentina. Man, I can’t wait to hear Landon Donovan’s reaction to this: if nothing else, we can count on a flood of Mexico-bashing.

I’m sorry, but when you play in CONCACAF it’s hard to make a compelling argument for being seeded. Rather than the U.S. being hard done by, Mexico should feel like they got a gift.
