Thats the luck of the draw…

by Sack the Juggler on May 3rd, 2007

You’ve got to feel sorry for Manchester United.  Here they are, on the brink of wrestling the Premiership title away from a dominant Chelsea, and having one of the brightest young squads in Europe, yet all the media attention from now through to the Champions League final, and possibly beyond (if they win it again) will be on a team that has managed to make an art out of progressing through the competition, not by beating top Italian teams 7-1, or even beating teams at all, but by avoiding getting beaten and by consistently winning penalty shoot-outs.

Perhaps the England team could learn a lesson or two in cup competitions from Liverpool?  It may not be pretty, but its effective, whereas England are not even pretty.

Liverpool now face a re-match against an aging Milan, and once again it is Liverpool who are the under-dogs.  Milan looked unstoppable against Manchester United, but Liverpool have shown they can park their bus better than anyone, so as sure as eggs is eggs Liverpool will win, sorry draw, yet another Champions League final and still bring the trophy home.

Both Milan and Liverpool are kings of Europe, beside Real Madrid. In 2005, Liverpool took advantage from Milan’s mental weakness to grab a trophy. This year? I think mental factor will be a difference again.

    ha ha ha

Honestly, Liverpool aren’t close as good as either United or Chelsea, and United did have a really bad off day against Milan, they’re better than that, and with their defenders in shape could have defended better.

But Liverpool are a cup team and have been for the last five years or so. And always winning penalty shoot outs helps, they defend like anything I’ve seen. Caraggher reminds me of the duracel bunny! He just goes and goes and goes. But not this time, I think Milan will have a few tricks up their sleeves, Gatusso will kick the living daylights out of Gerrrad. So maybe Milan will win, as much as I detest them and their owner. Two clubs I cannot stand - Milan and Real Madrid.

    Is your real name Mourinho?

I pity you now STJ - you’ve really lost it. It’s not Liverpool’s fault that Everton can’t even “avoid getting beaten”.

Start eating some sugar. Your bitterness is leaving a bad taste in everybody’s mouth.

Hi Mark, I thought Everton were very good at avoinding getting beaten… by Liverpool this season….

Why the hell would anyone feel sorry for Man Utd?!! All we’ve heard this season is how good they have been. They’ve deserved those plaudits. And as much of a wanker I still beleive Ronaldo is, I’d still say he deserves all the credit he’s been given. Giggs has had yet another awesome season and again the plaudits have recognised and sang his praises. When Roma got hammered 7-1, all you heard about was ‘what a great team Man Utd must be to beat Roma 7-1.’ Everything up to that game was justified, and everything after was overkill.
I agree it was a great result to come away with - but people - and the press - began talking about Man Utd like they are the best team to have ever graced this planet! Sorry - but no. Roma were missing their first choice back three. I also agree Man Utd have looked good going forwards this season, and attack in quite exciting fashion, but Utd have yet again failed in Europe.
I agree they have been the best in the premiereship this season, and they’ve had their credit. I do not for one moment feel sorry for them because Liverpool have made the most of thier own chances. Its about time Liverpool are given a bit of credit for achieving what they have so far this season. Its not like they took the easy route through the champions league. It seems to me until we win the league we won’t be given any credit - and even when we do certain people will still be unable to give them their due credit.

As for Gattuso’s comments - he said Liverpool have no players with individual skill. Gattuso can afford to make this comment as they have one of the worlds best players in Kaka. But then so do we in Gerrard. We also have Alonso, Mascherano, Reina. Crouch was being hunted by Juventus only a few months back. Yeah they don’t match up to the individual skill of Kaka - but we’ve beaten them before, and if we could overcome Kaka’s individual skill, then it doesn’t say much for the rest of the Milan team, does it?

Hey Mark - don’t just take my world for it…

“Former Real Madrid boss and Argentine World Cup winner Jorge Valdano has slaughtered the managers of Liverpool and Chelsea - Rafa Benitez and Jose Mourinho respectively - after their Champions League semifinal meeting.

In a column for Marca, a scathing Valdano penned: “Football is made up of subjective feeling, of suggestion - and, in that, Anfield is unbeatable. Put a s*** hanging from a stick in the middle of this passionate, crazy stadium and there are people who will tell you it’s a work of art. It’s not: it’s a s*** hanging from a stick.”

fair point well made I thought……

    Fair point well made?

    I don’t see what point you’re trying to prove…….

……..other than the fact that you are undeniably bitter!!

But I know this already, you don’t have to keep proving it.

See a shrink, have a chat, get things off your chest.

As for Everton, I think they are in the best shape they’ve been in for years, with real prospects if they can make a few progressive signings in the summer. I don’t hate them or despise the way they play (even though it is poorer than the way we play).

Why then do you hate us so much? What is wrong with this Liverpool team to inspire such hatred amongst bluenoses like yourself? It surely can’t be the way we play. You must have enjoyed the finals we have taken part in. The UEFA Cup 5 v 4 versus Alves, The European Cup 3 v 3 versus Milan and the FA Cup 3 v 3 versus West Ham. Those games must have been great for neutrals like yourself. What could have happened in them for you to despise us so much? Oh, I remember, we won them. Jealous a touch?

alright calm down Mark, I’m sure you enjoy the glory as much as any other glory hunter, but why are you getting so stressed about this? I was only pointing out what was said about the way Liverpool play. You need to relax and lower your blood pressure mate…. have you tried slitting your wrists? ;)

  • Mark Hobbs

Well I’m sure sliiting my wrists would work to lower my blood pressure. I’d probably prefer to watch Everton instead though. That would have the same effect.

Touche.. although the way we bounce up and down the league, doesn’t really help the blood pressure!

To digress a little bit, and since you’re such a big bluenose, I need to do some research into Everton legends due to a project I’m working on at work. Who would you say are the biggest say 5 legends at the club?

Southall, Labone, Ratcliffe, Ball & Gray? Or is Gray not that big a legend?

  • Sack the Juggler
    May 10, 2007 at 11:34 am

Picking out 5 legends is difficult and different fans would pick out a completely different set. I’d go with any five from:

    Dixie Dean
    Joe Mercer
    Alan Ball
    Brian Labone
    Alex Young
    Graeme Sharp
    Bob Latchford
    Andy Gray
    Duncan Ferguson
    Peter Reid
    Neville Southall
    Kevin Ratcliffe

There could be others; Wilson, Morrisey, Hinchcliffe, but it will depend on who you ask and what era they were bought up with.
