The Crouch Enigma - the Liverpool striker who can’t head the ball…. or can he?

by Sack the Juggler on April 1st, 2007

Just when you thought Peter Crouch was shit, he scores a hat-trick against Arsenal, and not just any old hat-trick, but one that is graceful, and contained three excellently worked goals, and most amazingly, he scored with a header that was right out of the “Art of Heading” manual.  He rose up and this time, instead of just letting the ball hit his head, he threw his head and torso forward to get power behind the ball, not tremendous power, but power none the less.

Admittedly, this hat-trick was against an Arsenal side whose wheels seem to have come off, but each goal was a joy and each contained the elements of a striker on top form, and possibly even a 20 goal a season striker!  The kind of striker in fact that Liverpool have been crying out for since the halcyon days of Fowler or Owen.

The trouble is, the Peter Crouch is that strange enigma that can one day produce a powerful display of fast feet, close control, strength and intelligence, whilst the next he can look like a ungainly puppet with its strings crossed and make hard work of the easiest of chances against a dire defence.

So the question is which Crouch will turn up, although maybe his recent operation wasn’t just to fix his nose but to fit a new striker programme;  Premiership striker, version 2.0?  So for the PSV game on Tuesday, will the real Peter Crouch please stand up?

Hats off to Crouchie Juggs. It was a class performance on Saturday, and I agree all three goals were taken brilliantly. I also agree his inconsistency has been his downfall. I have never thought he is shit though, and I think that’s very unfair. He has missed a bucket full of chances admittedly - but he’s pulled out some absolute class too. He’s scored two awesome overhead bycicle kicks and he’s has an awesome scoring record for England when he’s played. He often gets alot of slack when he fucks up, which is fair enough. And I totally agree his heading of the ball is…..well….atrocious mostly. But when I jumped out of my seat to cheer the second goal I found I was cheering just as much for the fact he’d scored a very good headed goal!
He’s always had nimble feet though, which he displayed for his third, and various times when holding up the ball with two arsenal defenders around him. It’s gotta be good with PSV up tomorrow - and thank fuck there’s an english striker scoring!!

Crouch is going to get even better because he keeps working at his game. Criticism has made him a better player and he is starting to understand rafa’s methods. He is going nowhere and we’ll be the better for it. Go crouchinho!

crouch willnever be the striker that we need at anfield. though he is some times brilliant he cant measure up to owen’s standards and eye for goal. despite his height, he is not a good header of the ball
