The End is in Sight for Maldini
The great Paolo Maldini today announced that he’ll retire when his current contract with Milan runs out, in 2007. By that date, he’ll be just short of 80 years of age and will doubtless still be one of the best defenders in the world. From the day he made his Serie A debut for Milan at 16 years old, Maldini has been the epitome of class. In a time when football is filled with selfish bastards who refused to play where they’re asked, air their grievances in the press, and fake injuries, he has been a credit to the game and to his club, never less than classy and respectful. He is fully aware of what is has accomplished, and is deeply grateful for the opportunities, and for the luck that has allowed him to stay relatively injury free over the course of his 20+ year career.
Not even considering his extraordinary ability, the way Maldini conducts himself makes him a credit to the game. I’m sure it will become nearly impossible to shut me up about the man when the day of his retirement draws near, but for now, suffice it to say that the entire sport will feel a void after he’s gone.

What a great loss to Milan and football in general indeed when Maldini does retire. A fabulous player and role model throughout his career, let’s hope he brings all that experience to bear and stays in the game when he finishes playing.
Now if only Northern Ireland could grow a left back like Paolo Maldini, we’d be world beaters…
