The Zidane-Materazzi Insult Roundup

by Alan on July 11th, 2006

I’m glad we’ve all learned one thing from the whole Zidane - Materazzi headbutt furore, lip readers don’t have a bloody clue what they’re doing. Let’s take a run through the various lip reading efforts from the experts as reported by the press:

THE SUN:

Materazzi called Zidane a “son of a terrorist whore”

and just for good measure:

‘a source close to the Italian squad claiming that after twisting Zidane’s nipple, Materazzi asked him: “What, don’t you like it?” The French captain replied: “A bit too hard to turn me on.” But Materazzi shouted: “Well, I did it that way because I know that’s how your mother likes it.”‘

THE GUARDIAN:

Materazzi said, “I wish an ugly death to you and all your family,” and then told Zidane to “go f**k yourself”.

THE INDEPENDENT:

‘It is alleged that Zidane responded by sarcastically telling Materazzi that he could have his shirt as a souvenir at the end of the match,’ the newspaper reports. ‘The Italian is alleged to have responded by saying that Zidane could keep it for his sister and then made an extremely derogatory comment about her. That version is backed up by lip-readers from the Brazilian TV channel Globo. They claim Materazzi called her a “prostitute”.

DAILY MIRROR:

‘The furious French captain attacked Marco Materazzi after the defender allegedly sneered: “All Muslims are terrorist b*****s.”

‘And sources claim the Italian even branded Zidane’s Algerian mum Malika “a whore”.’

DAILY MAIL:

‘Materazzi had insulted the memory of one of Zidane’s closest confidants and former coaches, Jean Varraud. The former AS Cannes coach died of cancer shortly before the tournament.’

Italian newspapers are claiming that Materazzi insulted Zidane’s mother, with the Inter Milan defender saying that the Frenchman “made love to his sister”.

Materazzi’s agent has claimed that Zidane offered to swap shirts later and the Italian replied: “‘I’d rather take the shirt off your wife.”

And Marco Materazzi himself had this to say:

“It is absolutely not true, I did not call him a terrorist. I’m ignorant. I’m ignorant - I don’t even know what the word means.”

I hope that’s cleared things up a bit for everyone ;-)

That dumb ass rebuttal by Materazzi convinces me he’s guilty.

If it was a racist slur on Zidane then I think some action has to be taken by FIFA. It’s like calling an Irish player a “Finian terrorist” or a German player a “Nazi”. I remember you posted on some of the chants by Rangers fans, that UEFA did not punish Rangers for. That decision baffled me, there is no place for prejudice either on the pitch or in the stands. Why should players accept racist abuse, I remeber Cantona also reacted to taunts. But, let’s assume Materazzi didn’t say it, you know, innocent until proven guilty.

At the end of the day though you cannot go around headbutting people on the football pitch, even if you are one of the best players in the world.

I don’t understand why Zidane just doesn’t come out and say what was said. Does he want this to drag on and on and on?

Zidane will always be the man.

Zidane is “el maestro” he surely had more than enough provocation to rage out…Materazzi’s own kids call hima monster, he will never be anything close to what Zidane was and is. Materazzi would talk bad about his own family if he had to piss someone off, dirty italians bring nothing but shame to soccer, and that is not beautiful futbol.
i believe that Zidane’s conscience is clear, he apologized to the kids and realizes it is unforgivable, but materazzi is an idiot “im, ignorant, i don’t even know what a terrorist is…”……COMMON!!! say what u said, stand up for the truth and be mocked for your foolishness.
I gotta say though, if Zidane wouldn’t have reacted like i would’ve (which is headbutting him), France would’ve had a 50% chance at the cup, in a way he ended his career w/ a red, lost game, and explosion of controversy.
In other words, the truth needs to come out so the world knows, and zidane wil be just fine doing what he does and being the best at it, who ever praised materazzi?? one or two people… ha ha ha ha ha

Zidane will not repeat what was said because he is just smart enough not to do that. It can be proved with proper lip readers during an investigation, then why would he repeat it, it would just be worst, come on!
