Thoughts on Milan v Udinese

by footie on November 6th, 2005

KakaSo, I think it’s safe to say that Milan are back. Man alive. After destroying Juve, they turn around and completely play a not-bad team off the pitch. 5-1 should have been 6-1 (Kaka was in alone and chipped it right into the keepers hands) and could have been more. It was the best kind of Milan - effortlessly keeping the ball, instinctively knowing where each run is going, and playing with flair, and generosity, and a clear love for the club. (In other words, the total opposite of Inter’s performance yesterday.)

What’s really scary is that thing got pretty ragged with about 20 minutes left when all the substitutions happened, and it was still 5-1. Imagine if they’d left everyone on, and kept attacking. Seriously, it might have been 10. And Udine are not a bad team - they were just unimaginably over-matched today.

Some random observations:

  • Gilardino was scary-lively, not only scoring but making things happen for everyone else. When Sheva gets back, those two could be deadly together.
  • Speaking of Sheva, last year when he was hurt, getting goals was like pulling teeth. This year? Not so much.
  • Pirlo was phenomenal; his every touch was perfect. Scored on a sick free kick with his right, nearly set up another with his left.
  • Rui, who is possibly my favorite player on the team, was so bad when he came on that even he was disgusted. I honestly think he gave it away literally every time he touched the ball. Poor guy.
  • Is there anyone who is more fun to watch than Gennaro Gattuso?
  • If you put Seedorf’s goal on a loop and played it for a room full of football haters, I bet at least half of them would suddenly get it - Seedorf to Kaka; nasty, one-touch backheel to scrawny Inzaghi; Inzaghi holds it up, then makes a harder-than-it-looks layoff to Seedorf for the goal. The whole thing took all of about 3.2 seconds - absolute magic.
