Tottenham Hotspur wont score until Christmas

by Sack the Juggler on September 22nd, 2006

What has gone wrong with Spurs?  They have, what were previously considered to be two of the most respected strikers in the league, Keane and Defoe.  They have just bought Berbatov and Mido, both of whom also represent their country at a national level.  They have an exciting midfield and last season only just missed out on a Champions League place due to a dodgy lobster bisque.

But this season, despite their strengthening over the summer with the likes of Zakora and Malbranque, they haven’t got out the blocks, they seem tired and disinterested, maybe they are still feeling the effects of that lobster bisque?

Apart from two goals against lowly Sheffield United, Spurs haven’t scored in the league.   To add to their woes Lennon, Malbranque, Berbatov are amongst their long term injured.  And as if that wasn’t enough they have games against Liverpool, Portsmouth and Villa coming up, followed by visits from two of their London rivals West Ham and Chelsea.

The worse part for the Tottenham fans is, that although they have these injuries, they also have one of the largest and brightest squads in the league, but you still feel they couldn’t even score on grab-a-granny night with Wayne Rooney!

I know December is a long way off, but you can bet the Spurs fans will be hoping for an early Christmas present against a resurgent Liverpool this weekend…

7 opinions for Tottenham Hotspur wont score until Christmas

While the fans were hoping for us to explode out of the blocks this season we’ve been limping around (in some cases literally) like a bunch of knobbled old grannies.

Berbatov is out for the forseeable future with a groin injury exacerbated by the Bulgarian FA while on international duty and it’s a rea lshame, he looked good when he did play.

The others are pale shadows of themselves for one reason - Martin Jol’s tactical naivety. He might give a few good soundbites in interviews and look like Tony Soprano but I’m afraid Cock and Dick’s brother has been exposed tactically from as long ago as last Christmas and that’s the real reason we didn’t finish 4th, not some dodgy lasagne.

If someone is not going to be the man to take you further long term is it better to cut him loose now or wait to see if he can at least steady a very troubled ship? I want stability but not at the expense of sticking with a coach who isn’t up to the job.

Hi Alan - I’d forgotten about his brothers names. Last season you must have been happy with Jols, lets face it, if they hadn’t had that virus they would have most likely won and consigned Arsenal to the UEFA. How good would that have felt, and would Jols have been a hero then?

I think its just a hangover from getting so close, but in a few games you’ll be back up to stride. Good players don’t become bad overnight, and Jol for all his faults is still the one who has bought them all together.

You never know, this game against Liverpool might be the one that kick-starts your season!

by the way, just out of curiousity, where have all the funds come from? I know Jol sold carrick, but he must have spent the best part of £60m since he arrived?

Alan; Jol’s tactically inept. Let’s sack him. That’s the answer! and why not Levy and Comoli as well. that’ll sort out all our problems. I’m so sick of this negative shit. cast your memory back a few seasons…. this is the best we’ve had it in years! don’t get on the managers back after 5 games, give him time cos he has done better than anyone else in donkey’s years and sacking him aint gonna achieve shit!

    In Jol we trust.

Blind faith Berkshire, he’s shown time and again that he doesn’t know how to get the best out of the quality players we have. He may have gotten us stabilised and into 5th spot but he doesn’t have what it takes to really break into that old boy’s club of the top four.

Being realistic is seeing that the glass may be half full but the guy pouring your pint is never going to be able to fill it all the way to the top (apologies for pure rubbish metaphor but you know what I mean).

So what Jol can’t break us into the top 4 in his 2nd season? I think we got lucky last year, and I would be happy to see us get top 6. Remember Jol said he had a 5 year plan? Not too wise, then, to sack him for not winning us the title straight away.

Alan is spot on in his article…….it’s all the teenagers swooning still, (Just like the players I might add!)…just because we ended up forth we have to all put up with crap!!!…Wankers the lot of you…we were in trouble from at least last Xmas….all you little girl chearleaders saying ” Have faith” piss me off!

Blind, naive wankers who would not know bad tactics and bad team selection if they jumped up and hit you in the fucking eye!

Pratts like you lot will consign us to ten more years of underachievement!

Kennym - footballs a passionate game, but try to remember that therer’s two sides to every story. Every fan out there thinks they could pick better players, better teams, better tactics, but at the end of the day its the Manager who makes those decisions and no matter what he does there will be someone who would have done it differently.

If you did get rid of Jol then you’d probably have another 3 or 4 years while the new manager sorted out the team he wants.

But since you mention it, if you did sack Jol, who would you replace him with?
