United Eyeing Juventus Raid
After hearing yesterday that Manchester United hadn’t yet made a move for Fernando Torres, we’ve now heard Sir Alex Ferguson highlight just where his transfer intentions lie for this summer and unsurprisingly his sights are set directly on the imminent looting of the Old Lady of Italian football, Juventus.
With Juventus looking at, at least, two seasons in Serie B it’s common knowledge that they will be moving on many of their current stars and the vultures of the European game are already circling and getting ready to battle it out for the richer pickings.
Chelsea and Real Madrid have both been linked with Italian World Cup winning captain Fabio Cannavaro but the man who impressed most in Germany this summer has also now been earmarked by Manchester United, along with clubmates Patrick Vieira, Gianluigi Buffon, Lilian Thuram and Emerson who Ferguson himself has said are “the ones that people will be focusing on”.
As an old sparring partner of both Roy Keane and the soon to be departed Ruud Van Nistlerooy, Patrick Vieira has the most “history” with Manchester United but with both of his old adversaries gone from the club and with United looking to strengthen their centre midfield positions, he could well be set for a return to English football after only one season in Italy.
Less likely to consider Old Trafford are Buffon, Cannavaro and Emerson with the rumoured interest in the three from Real Madrid likely to turn their heads. Thuram might be considered just the wrong side of the “experienced” line to be risked at Manchester United as they try to avoid a repeat of the Laurent Blanc signing after France ‘98 when the spirit was willing but the great Frenchman’s body was just no longer able.
With other Juve players like Zambrotta (although linked with Chelsea), Camoranesi, Nedved, Trezeguet and Ibrahaimovic still available it’s not inconceivable that Ferguson might come back from Turin with more than one new signing, the only stumbling block could be the transfer budget he finds made available to him after the Glazer family’s recent financial restructuring at Old Trafford.
The vultures may be descending but it looks like a fight to the death amongst them as to who gets the richest pickings from the stricken carcass of one of the world’s biggest football clubs.
