Weekend Premiership Roundup - 13th March 2006
Neither Birmingham City nor West Bromwich Albion did their survival hopes any favours with a hard fought 1-1 draw in their Midlands derby at St. Andrews. Sitting 18th and 17th respectively and with West Brom holding only a three point advantage and having played a game more, it couldn’t be tighter as the two Brummie sides battle hard to keep their Premiership status and their two managers, both former Manchester United title winning captains, contemplate the thought of life outside the top division.
Former Spurs midfielder Pedro Mendes banged in two clinking strikes from outside the box to give Portsmouth a valuable three points as they fight their lives a place below Birmingham and even though it was a welcome boost for Harry Redknapp’s side against a solid Manchester City, I really can’t see them having the strength in depth to claw their way to safety. too little too late for Harry and his boys after a dismal start to the season under Alain “Reggie” Perrin.
The battle for fourth spot has heated up another degree after Spurs late defeat against the runaway Russians and Arsenal overcame Liverpool while Bolton ran out comfortable 4-1 winners against fellow European hopefuls West Ham. Alan Pardew has worked miracles at Upton park this season and even a UEFA Cup spot for next season would have been unthought of territory for the ‘Appy ‘Ammers before the season started.
Elsewhere, Newcastle, Sunderland and Middlesbrough all were beaten to complete a miserable weekend for the North East but with Sunderland already relegated and the other two languishing in mid-table obscurity, does anyone outside of Tyneside, Teeside and Wearside really care?
The title is all but wrapped up and as I said last week, we’ve only the relegation fight and the contest for European also-ran places to keep us interested in the Premiership’s run-in. Roll on the World Cup for some excitement please.
