West Ham’s Bubbles keep bursting

by Sack the Juggler on September 29th, 2006

Whenever I heard West Ham fans singing their song, I keep thinking they’re refering to Ronald Reagan’s co-star, Bubbles the Chimp, and how that is just so wrong!

They have their own Chimp now, Tevez ….but lets not take that analogy any further

Great players do not make a great team, although if you have a great team then great players will stand out, and for my money West Ham have always produced great teams.  Their philosophy has always been that they should entertain the crowd by playing great football, and along the way they’ve had some great players to raise their game even further (who can forget Paulo Di Canio?).

But a great team is not just about assembling the best players, its about encouraging them to play as a team, to enjoy the game and get the most out of it.  In the Premiership especially, team work and confidence can make the difference between a European spot and relegation.

If players minds aren’t 100% on the game, then they are going to miss that split second opportunity to score that goal, or make that tackle.  You will track back a couple of seconds too late and the gap in front of your defence will be exploited.  The more you are distracted, the worse your game becomes, you are not gelling with the rest of the team, then you start playing like a group of individuals, making runs that your team mates aren’t aware of, or passing to a man who isn’t there.

At the end of last season you would have said that, under Pardew, the good times had returned to Upton Park.  They were playing attractive football (as ever) but were hard to beat, and had an FA cup final run that went right to the wire.

This season it looked like it was going to be more of the same, with a 3-1 defeat of Charlton on the opening day, but its all been downhill since then.  To be fair the other two results in August weren’t that bad, and with the signing of Tevez and Mascherano, West Ham had looked to have strengthened their squad.

But with the two Argentinian’s came a lot of speculation.  They were only using West Ham as a shop window, the club was going to be taken over, Pardew to be replaced, Reo-Coker going to Arsenal in January.

All these rumours, some without foundation, seem to be having an effect on West Ham.  While Tevez and Mascherano put themselves on display, whose careers will suffer?  Who will the new owner bring in? If Nigel is off to Arsenal, should I be thinking of a move to? In fact, all these things seem to be floating around the heads of the players while they wait to see what happens to the club, the manager, the squad.

Thats why its important for Pardew to get the players focused on the team again. To get them playing as a team again, to be 100% focused on the game, because if they don’t, if they’re attention keeps wondering then the results will keep going against them then their confidence will continue falling, and instead of looking at another European place, they will find themselves involved in a relegation battle.

Terence Brown and the Board need to sort out this takeover quickly, tell Joorabichian to put his money where his mouth is, or West Ham’s latest Premiership return, like their dreams, will fade and die…
