What in the world is wrong with Kieron Dyer?
Yesterday, after a few days of “he’s out but again we swear it really isn’t his hamstring this time” reports from the club, Newcastle United’s Kieron Dyer was ruled out because of an unspecified “medical condition.” Now, I have to admit that, as a Newcastle fan who has grown cynical by necessity, my immediate assumption was that the “medical condition” they were referring to was an addiction to either drugs or alcohol, possibly both. After all, anyone who has watched Dyer for even a couple of years knows that, despite a blazing talent, he’s unable or unwilling to control himself - on or off the pitch. So there I was heartlessly blaming the guy, cursing his stupidity, and slipping easily into my old familiar Toon self-pity when I read the following quote from Graham Souness:
It is nothing that Kieron’s done, this is not a lifestyle problem. It’s nothing he has done to bring this situation on. He is just a very, very, very unlucky young man.
Wait. So there’s something seriously wrong with the guy? Well, now I both feel bad and am really freaked out. With all the discussion here in the US of athletes with untreated/unnoticed heart problems, the first thing that comes to mind is some sort of potentially fatal illness or irregularity. I hope it’s something less seriously - you know, like some sort of genetic hamstring weakness (which would certainly explain a lot) - but either way, it’d sure be nice to know what exactly is going on.
Plus, from a purely selfish point of view, there is this: could the discovery of this mystery condition possibly have come at a worse time for the club?! For the love of God, we were finally getting everyone back and healthy!

[...] Kieron Dyer has been taken over by a pod. First there’s something wrong with him that’s not a hamstring and not the result of his own stupidity, and now he’s busting into tears in front of the team. What’s next, swearing off women and liquor? [...]
