What Makes Deadline Day So Nerve Wracking?

by Alan on August 31st, 2006

The biggest day of the English transfer market and to help pay the bills I had to spend much of it out of the office and away from a computer. Not good news for a man who still holds high hopes of Spurs pulling a big signing out of the bag come midnight tonight and especially not in a day when major transfers to unlikely clubs and high stakes brinkmanship are the order of the day in the Premiership.

West Ham’s greatest ever coup of signing Carlos Tevez and Javier Mascherano must go down as one of the biggest shocks in footballing history. I still can’t believe they’ve pulled it off, no matter what the motives behind the move are or the Chelsea conspiracy theories that are being bandied about. This is potentially the biggest double signing in English football history, matched only by Spurs’ audacious coup in signing Ossie Ardiles and Ricky Villa back in 1978. I bet West ham fans can’t get the smiles off their faces with spanners this evening.

Arsenal seem to have played the high stakes game perfectly and look set to complete the swap deals taking Ashley Cole to Chelsea in exchange for cash plus William Gallas and Jose Antonio Reyes to Real Madrid in exchange for “The Beast” Julio Baptista. Two great pieces of business for the Goons (do you know how much it hurts me to type that?) and on top of getting a bargain in Tomas Rosicky they’ve really done some great work in this transfer window.

Some other minor moves are afloat (Chimbonda to Spurs, Malbranque to Spurs, Kilbane to Wigan etc.) but none that rival those above for shock value or for great negotiating skills on behalf of the clubs involved.

It’s been a tough day and it isn’t over yet. Thank goodness the transfer window doesn’t open again until January!

I can’t believe, considering the audacity I’d bet Charlton are now going to buy Ronaldo from Real Madrid. I’d prefer it actually if Thuram came to Charlton with Cannavaro. The defence are just poor, especially karkouri

But I heard its a business thing, it was something like the company that owned their rights have an interest in buying West Ham. Dunno if that had something to do with the deal, follow the money trail.

I found it funny you posted this a few days ago

“So Chelsea or Manchester United then? Who will it be?”

It’s West Ham! Unbloodybelievable! They’re half the size of Charlton, don’t have half of Charlton’s class, and they are a feeder club for Charlton!

Just kidding, but I remember the days they were in the championship and Charlton were looking day saying: ha ha ha ha

Oh do I love those days.
