When Gary Met Diego
Take a look through this fascinating picture gallery prelude to a BBC documentary to be shown before the World Cup in the summer about Gary Lineker’s trip to Argentina to meet up with his old adversary from the 1986 World Cup, Diego Maradona.
The pictures show Lineker having dinner with Maradona at his parents’ house in Buenos Aires and the two old foes enjoying a match as spectators at Diego’s old club Boca Juniors where he is now the football director.
After struggling with his weight and drug addictions over the past decade Maradona looks the picture of health and almost has the look of his playing days, back when he ruled the world singlehandedly (pun not intended England fans!) in the blue and white of Argentina.
I’m really looking forward to the documentary now as it isn’t too often you get to see two of world football’s golden boys of twenty years ago (can it really be that long since Mexico ‘86?) hanging out together and catching up. Bit like this photo of the world’s greatest ever player…
