Will The Last Player Out Of Arsenal Please Turn Off The Lights?
Anyone in the Highbury crowd naive enough to think that Cesc Fabregas was just being polite when he said ‘It’s a source of pride and happiness for me that a team like Real Madrid are interested in me’ this week needs to take off their plum-tinted spectacles and start understanding their great team of the undefeated season is being systematically dismantled and, most worringly for them, from within.
After selling their red card loving captain Patrick Vieira to Juventus in the summer and not buying an experienced replacement, North London’s second club have pinned their hopes on 18 year old Fabregas to step up and deliver the goods in Vieira’s place and he has admittedly turned in some worthy performances, the main one being against Real Madrid in the first leg of their Champion’s League tie at the Bernabeu.
Maybe I’m a bit cynical but with Fabregas talking of “one day” returning to play in Spain and then saving his best performance of the season for the very club who will be doing some major rebuilding in the summer, I wouldn’t be surprised to see young Cesc and his mate Thierry Henry sat beside each other on a one way flight from Heathrow to Madrid come the summer.
Arsenal have lost their free flowing edge and with their money all being poured into the white elephant stadium at Ashburton Grove, they really don’t have the funds to compete in the transfer market with Chelsea or Manchester United to replace their ageing stars.
United pay £30m for Wayne Rooney, Chelsea pay £27m for Shaun Wright Phillips, Arsenal put £500,000 down on Theo Walcott.
Spot the difference.
