World Cup 2006 Group C Preview: Argentina
You know that things haven’t been completely rosy in the Argentina camp before a World Cup when Diego Maradona is on TV telling everyone how much he wants to coach the national side. If there is one figure who could rally the will of the nation then it’s going to be Diego but when he’s sitting in a Spanish TV booth commentating and Jose Pekerman is the coach on the bench then there may be the beginnings of some doubts being raised as to Argentina’s ability to go all the way in Germany, twenty years after Maradona led them to success in Mexico in 1986.
A dismal showing four years ago with a shameful first round exit has meant that expectations have been lowered somewhat for this Argentinian squad but as always there will be no doubting exactly how far the country and it’s world class players will want to go.
Injury problems and loss of form for key players have troubled Pekerman in his build up to the finals but with a little less pressure on the players we could see a rekindling of the old Argentina flame as they certainly have the talent, whether they have the will to push beyond the quarter finals (or indeed the first round) this time around remains to be seen.
