World Cup 2006 Group D Preview: Iran - Players To Watch
Scorer of one of Iran’s most famous World Cup goals in the 2-1 victory over the USA in 1998, Mehdi Mahdavikia is more renowned in his adopted Germany for creating goals than scoring them. The influential wideman has been a virtual ever present for Iran and his club SV Hamburg since the last time they qualified for the World Cup where he caught the eye with several classy displays.
The world’s top international goalscorer with 109 goals in approaching 150 international games, Ali Daei is still the main man for Iran when it comes to finding the net. The experienced captain of the national side is expected to retire once Iran’s involvement in the finals ends but during the few matches he has left, his wealth of knowledge and experience will be vital.
