World Cup 2006 Group D Preview: Iran
Iran arrive at their third World Cup finals after failing at the first hurdle in 1978 and 1998 and will be looking to go at least one step further this time around.
While the memory of their victory in France 1998 over the United States of America is still strong for their fans, the players have grown even more since then and have occupied a top 20 position in FIFA’s world rankings for more than a year.
Their group is one of the seemingly easier ones to navigate but with Portugal and Mexico looking the strongest on paper, there will be some tough times ahead for the Iranians and their Croat coach Branko Ivankovic if they want to make that next step up in class at these finals.
