World Cup 2006 Group D Preview: Mexico
Unable to perform on foreign soil, disagreements at home about using naturalised players and the omission from the squad of one of their most naturally gifted players (Cuauhtemoc Blanco) makes Mexico’s World Cup chances sound slim to say the least. That would, of course, be a monumental mistake to make.
Have been seeded for the group stages they’ve managed to find themselves in a relatively easier paced group alongside Portugal, Iran and Angola. Qualification for the lively Mexicans seems almost assured and then on to a second round tie against the winners or runners up from “Group of Death” Group C and if they progress from that then there could be a shock run to the semi-finals on.
Coach Ricardo Lavolpe, an Argentinian, has instilled a new mindset in Mexican international football, blooding young stars in time to get them the necessary experience for a major finals and scheduling plenty of training camps and friendlies for their largely home-based squad.
If they keep their heads in the group stages, Mexico may well be a surprise package for a lot of nations.

Gear up for grub with a tripleheader of pigskin, including a meeting of brothers in Dallas. Everybody knows it’s been a rough year for her, but find out who else had issues
