World Cup 2006 Group E Preview: Czech Republic

by Alan on May 31st, 2006

Encouraging tired and ageing limbs back into action has been one of the hallmarks of the Czech Republic’s qualification campaign for Germany 2006 and if they are to have any hope of crawling out of a potentially dangerous group with the USA, Italy and Ghana then those creaking knees and joints will need some super special attention.

When the knees in question belong to such Czech superstars as Pavel Nedved, Karel Poborsky and Jan Koller then we can begin to understand the necessity coach Karel Bruckner has found in reviving their international careers and trying to nurse these heroes of the last decade of Czech Republic success through one more tournament.

Strong in defence and cunning in attack with Nedved and new Arsenal signing Tomas Rosicky pulling the creative strings, the Czechs will be hoping to emulate their fine form of Euro 2004 in Germany. Sadly the treatment table may play as large a part in some of the older generations’ World Cup campaign as the pitch will but if they manage to stay fit and play well then there is more than a slim chance of repeating the heroics of two years ago in Portugal.
