World Cup 2006 Group E Preview: Italy - Players To Watch
Italy’s Capocannonieri for 2005/2006, Luca Toni, has more than his fair share of problems in club football to stack up with his top goalscorer award this season. Having scored over 30 goals in the season to fire Fiorentina to fourth spot in Serie A and into next season’s Champion’s League, he has found his club embroiled at the centre of the match fixing allegations sweeping Italian football. If Italy can expect to fight their way out of Group E then they must make sure that Toni has his mind fully on the World Cup.
AC Milan’s classy playmaker Andrea Pirlo is going to play as vital a role for italy as he usually does for Milan, sitting deep and providing a steady head and quick feet as they move out of defence. Not lauded as much for his defensive work as his passing and set pieces, Pirlo will be one of Italy’s main dangermen over free kicks.
