World Cup 2006 Group G Preview:- Players To Watch

by Alan on June 6th, 2006

Switzerland’s Johann Vogel is no longer the fresh faced boy wonder of the Swiss side, the 29 year old is now the captain and defensive midfield mainstay of the side and will work harder and more economically than any of his cohorts.

Arsenal’s Emmanuel Adebayor is Togo’s main (and only) hope of making some kind of impact on the World Cup this summer. 10 goals in qualification and a big money move to Arsenal have been the highlights of his career to date, whether he can add a goal on the German stage depends as much on his own ingenuity as it does on his teammates being capable of creating something for him.

Park Ji-sung has won many admirers in English football for his talent and hard working attitude in his appearances for Manchester United this season. Often overshadowed by the Riverdance-esque antics of Cristiano Ronaldo on the other wing, Park gets his job done quietly and well and is the main man to watch for in South Korean colours this summer.

Is it one World Cup too far for Zinedine Zidane or does the old magic still flow through the legs of one of European football’s greatest talents? The spirit may be willing but the body is frequently unable these days and while we all wish it was the Zidane of France ‘98 that we would be watching, it’s unlikely to be quite the same. He’s still got the footballing brain though and it would be the most foolish football watcher in the world who would write the great man off as he prepares to pull the curtain down on one of the greatest footballing careers France has ever produced.
