World Cup Group A Preview: Ecuador
Having cut their World Cup teeth in Japan/Korea 2002, Ecuador are ready to prove that they aren’t simply in Germany to make up the numbers and feel a need to prove that their country’s football development has moved their standard up another notch.
Despite back handed swipes about their ability to only win at home due to the altitude and their dislike for travelling, the Ecuador squad and coach, Colombian Luis Fernando Suarez, are prepared to show that they have what it takes to take on the Europeans on their own soil and progress to the second round.
With Suarez favouring a direct, pacey attacking style utilising the flanks, Ecuador are a different outfit to that in the Far East four years ago and could spring a few surprises on unwary opponents, especially with so many players looking to put themselves in the shop window for moves to the bigger leagues in Europe at the same time as fighting for their national team.
