World Cup Group A Preview: Germany

by Alan on May 23rd, 2006

It’s been a tough 22 months in charge of the German national side for former World Cup winning striker Jurgen Klinsmann after he replaced former teammate Rudi Voller in the German hotseat.

Despite being a national hero on the pitch, Klinsmann has incurred the wrath of the German press and public for his unorthodox approach to football management, his refusal to leave his home in the USA except for matches and his reluctance to try and curry favour with the formidable German media who have been more used to access under previous German regimes.

The team’s inability to string together a few decent results hasn’t helped either and as Klinsmann’s public popularity slips, the vultures have began to circle in the event of a less than spectacular showing when the going gets underway on 9th June in Munich.

The host nation expects as does their coach, whether the current squad is up to the job is more than doubtful. Typical German work ethic and team solidarity will be present as usual, the absence of a world class striker such as Klinsmann himself or the aforementioned Voller is still a major worry and with this in mind, the quarter finals would be an acceptable place for Germany’s World Cup bid to falter. Maybe not good enough for Jurgen Klinsmann to stay in a job but just about good enoughto save some face on home soil.
